Lyft Rape Cases in TexasAmong Lyft rape cases are some in Texas. These include an Uber driver’s alleged sexual assault of a passenger in Austin in 2015. Arrested by Williamson County Sheriff’s Department personnel and facing a charge of sexual assault is the male Lyft driver, Angel Interial, 36, of Georgetown, TX. The victim was a woman who’d reportedly been “bar-hopping” in downtown Austin and then had a friend use the Lyft app to summon a driver to take her home. The woman later said she went in and out of consciousness and awoke at home the next morning with physical signs of a sexual assault. She reported the rape to Austin Police on July 12, 2015, while providing them with a screenshot of the Lyft receipt, including the driver’s photo. Lyft later identified the driver as Interial. Lyft said it “permanently deactivated the driver” and “worked closely with the authorities during their investigation.” Reportedly, DNA test results linked Interial to the sexual assault. If convicted of the second-degree felony, he faces two to 20 years in prison and a fine of as much as to $10,000. In San Antonio, Morgan Lee sued Lyft, Inc. for over $1 million after alleging she’d been sexually assaulted by a Lyft driver when she hailed a ride home in June of 2017. The woman’s Lyft rape lawsuit accused Lyft and its driver, Refugio Campos, of acting with “flagrant and malicious disregard” for her “health and safety.” Her lawsuit also seeks unspecified punitive damages, which go beyond actual financial costs to her and involve punishing the defendants. This is reportedly the first Lyft rape lawsuit filed in Bexar County district court. Campos reportedly has not yet been arrested. Lyft Sexual Assault Allegations Across AmericaElsewhere across America, Lyft rapes and sexual assaults have been reported. They include a Sept. 16, 2017 rape by a Lyft driver of a female passenger in Indianapolis, IN. Facing felony charges of rape, sexual battery and criminal confinement was Nour Baber Mahmoud Albadri, 22, of Indianapolis. That Lyft driver reportedly stopped outside the town of Zionsville while en route to their destination and raped his 23-year-old passenger. The driver later was arrested and charged, for which a conviction would mean a prison sentence of up to 27 years. “As soon as we were made aware of his incident, we immediately deactivated the driver’s account,” a Lyft spokesperson said in a statement. “We have reached out to the passenger to offer our support and assistance and have been in communication with authorities.” Not all Lyft rape victims are female. In Miami-Dade County, FL, a Lyft driver was arrested and held without bond after being accused of forcing a teenage boy to perform oral sex on him. Julio Perez, 43, was held without bond. Perez allegedly went into the home of the boy, 16, after they arrived there and forced him to perform oral sex. Perez later was found via information that the boy provided to police. But detectives said Lyft officials didn’t make it any easier to locate the driver. "Lyft was not as cooperative as other apps on releasing information on who the driver was. We were able to get it the next day," Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle told the news media. "Parents need to be aware that these services may be questionable and the drivers may be questionable." Lyft’s policy reportedly maintains that minors should be with an adult when hailing a ride. Lyft said the driver in Florida had been screened and had passed a thorough sex offender and background check. Also, on July 7, 2017, a Lyft driver in Chicago was arrested after police said he restrained, raped and robbed a female passenger, 25, at knifepoint in the back of his vehicle. Charged with armed robbery, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping and unlawful restraint was Lyft driver Angelo McCoy, 48. The victim reportedly had been “bar-hopping” with friends and needed a ride home. Instead, she reportedly was raped and robbed when the Lyft driver pulled over into an alley and stopped. She later escaped his vehicle when he resumed driving and stopped at a red light. A Lyft spokesperson said the driver’s account was deactivated. But such actions are small solace for victims of Lyft rapes.
